The Washington Society of Addiction Medicine (WSAM), incorporated in 1991, supports ASAM's agenda for improving treatment, sponsoring educational activities, and promoting prevention measures, while also working closely with other state and local organizations having mutual interests. ASAM developed the first certification program in addiction medicine which includes a rigorous, comprehensive six-hour examination. As of 1995, 3,000 physicians have been certified by ASAM. A variety of opportunities for education and training are offered to member and non-member physicians through clinical and scientific conferences and courses, such as: * The Ruth Fox Course for Physicians * The Annual Medical-Scientific Conference * The Conference on Nicotine Dependence * The State of the Art Course This is a sampling of ASAM's annual educational activities. The national organization also co-sponsors a number of other quality addiction educational events, offering CME credits.
