Some members are Board Certified. A Board Certified addiction specialist is a physician certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) and/or a psychiatrist certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) who has demonstrated by education, experience, and examination the requisite knowledge and skills to provide prevention, screening, intervention, and treatment for substance use disorders (addictions).

Addiction Medicine and Addiction Psychiatry are relatively new medical specialties. The following article provides a concise summary of the history of this discipline:
We acknowledge that one size does not fit all, but for many individuals afflicted with an addiction, current research supports that lasting recovery is more likely to result from a combination of complimentary services (for example, counseling, support groups, and when appropriate, medication).
We are trained to appropriately prescribe and monitor medications that assist in treatment, as well as recognize and treat co-occurring disorders. (addiction accompanied by one or more mental health disorders).
